Technical efficiency and impact of environmental regulations in farrow‐to‐finish swine production in Taiwan

Abstract: This article demonstrates how technical efficiency and the impact of environmental regulations of Taiwanese farrow-to-finish swine production can be estimated in the presence of undesirable outputs. The issue of measuring technical efficiencies while considering undesirable outputs has been addressed by past studies. But the proper method of including undesirable outputs has always been a subject of debate. This article develops a data envelopment analysis (DEA)-based model that includes undesirable outputs. T… Show more

“…Furthermore, TE estimates have often been related to some 'farm-specific characteristics' 2 or socioeconomic variables to explain the differences in TE (Galanopoulos et al, 2006;Gaspar et al, 2009;Heshmati et al, 1995;Oude Lansink and Reinhard, 2004;Rowland et al, 1998;Sharma et al, 1999;Tonsor and Featherstone, 2009). Other studies have examined the relationship between animal welfare compliance and TE in pig production (Czekaj et al, 2013) or with environmental TE, where environmental inputs or outputs are included in the analysis (Asmild and Hougaard, 2006;PiotLepetit and Vermersch, 1998;Yang et al, 2008). An analysis divided according to production types (i.e.…”

“…4 SeeHua and Bian (2007) or You and Yan (2011) for an extended review of these methods. 5 Weak disposability assumes that it is costly to reduce undesirable outputs because it increases the inputs or decreases desirable outputs at the same time (Yang et al, 2008). 6 See Zhou et al (2008) for a review of studies using this approach.…”

“…Hua and Bian (2008) propose a network based efficiency measure incorporating undesirable outputs but no production theoretical background of this measure is presented. Yang et al (2008) propose an analysis with both a production and an abatement stage, but they do not separate the efficiencies of these stages. Coelli et al (2007) suggest an approach where technical and environmental allocative efficiency is analyzed.…”
