Technical Note: Homogeneity of Gafchromic®EBT2 film

Abstract: EBT2 films from the lot investigated in this study show response inhomogeneities, which lead to uncertainties in dose determination exceeding the commonly accepted tolerance levels. It is important to test further EBT2 lots regarding homogeneity before using the film in clinical routine.

“…The EBT‐XD film exhibited the same behavior as EBT2 and EBT3 films 10 , 12 . It should be noted that the difference of 0.010 in the net OD for the EBT‐XD film at 2,000 cGy is equivalent to a variation of 5% in the 100 cGy dose.…”

“…The properties of these EBT films have been reported in several publications, based on investigations conducted by using several types of photon, electron, and proton beams 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 . Their energy response 7 , 8 , 11 absorption spectra (9) scanning orientation dependence 10 , 11 film homogeneity (12) temperature dependence 10 , 13 ambient light sensitivity (10) postexposure coloration 10 , 11 and variations among different lot numbers (14) were analyzed. The use of EBT3 films is limited to doses below 1000 cGy, owing to the optimality constraint on the film's red channel (10) .…”

“…The red and green channels had an normalR2 value of 0.9999 in 0–10 Gy range. The pixel data of red channel was used for further analyses of measurement films, as the correlation curve of the red channel showed highest response gradient in comparison with other channels (48) . Comparison of film measured and LGP calculated dose distribution were done in the axial plane at Z=101mm, represented in (Fig.…”

“…Detailed film dosimetry procedure is described in Devic et al and others. ( 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ) We applied similar procedures for our study. The obtained dose map was compared with TPS‐calculated dose grid using in‐house developed MATLAB codes.…”
