Technical Notes: Tube Sampler for Zooplankton

Abstract: A tube sampler and a Wisconsin plankton SLT **? I" * °' UaCrC hatCheiy ">»* for compS «on of zooplankton sampling efficiencies. Zooplankton samples taken with the tube sampler and a Wisconsui Plankton net showed the tube sampler to 4 moc ient u, captunng zooplankton. The tube sampler made t convenient to mcrease the number of sampling s£ tions, which should provide more accurate qualitative and quantitative data on pond zooplankton.

“…In 2006, daily samples were analyzed for phytoplankton and zooplankton; in 2007, twice‐weekly samples were collected throughout the study. Water samples were collected by taking five tube samples (Graves and Morrow 1998) from the northeastern and southwestern corners of each pond (water depth = 1.3 m) and combined to obtain a total water volume of about 8 L. Chemical and biological variables from each pond were estimated from subsamples of this composite sample.…”

“…These included temperature and dissolved oxygen (%), measured using an Oxi 330i/set meter, turbidity (Eutech TN-100 turbidimeter), conductivity (Hanna Hi 9033 multi-range conductivity meter) and pH (330i/set). Water samples for total dissolved phosphorus and chlorophyll a were collected following the tube sampling method (Graves and Morrow 1998). Tubes of 6 cm diameter and different lengths depending on the depth of a particular sampling point were used.…”

“…Zooplankton samples were collected with the tube sampler (Graves and Marrow 1988) between 0800 and 0900 from one station at the deepest part of each pond. Three L of water from each pond was filtered through a Wisconsin ( 8 0 -~m mesh) plankton net to concentrate the zooplankton, which was preserved in 4% formalin.…”
