Technical requirements framework of hospital information systems: design and evaluation

Abstract: Background: Implementing the health information system (HIS) is more complex and costly than implementing other information systems. The present study was conducted to design and evaluate technical requirements for the HIS. Methods: The present study was conducted in 2016 by determining technical requirements for the HIS using the Delphi technique and then evaluating this system using a checklist based on the approved requirements. Results: The first part of the study designed a 73-item final list of technical… Show more

“…Furthermore, integration of healthcare information systems into work processes affects their use by healthcare workers [ 55 ]. Implementing HISs in such an environment is more complex and costly than implementing other information systems [ 56 ]. Successful implementation of an HIS depends on user satisfaction.…”

“…Ambiguous or incompatible standards [1], programming errors and different host system configurations [2] are four examples of underlying causes behind interoperability issues [1,3]. If these issues are not dealt with correctly, they can result in loss of data, unreliable operation, low maintainability, and unpredictable performance [3].…”

“…Such conglomerates of health services illustrate the complexity of HIS procurements and the challenge of specifying concrete requirements. Together with insufficient technical expertise among procurement managers and conflicting needs, this may lead to inadequate specifications, prolonged procurement processes, increased costs, and purchases that do not yield the desired value [2,5,7,9]. Despite several regulations, guidelines, recommendations, and frameworks that aim to facilitate procurements [1,11,12], several challenges remain; need analysis, lack of interoperability and standardizations [5].…”

“…Therefore, HIS are essential to improving healthcare services' safety and quality (Salahuddin et al, 2020). Moreover, the rapid evolution of information technologies (IT) and the digitalization of patient data require more efficient technical requirements, particularly in communications, architecture, security, and system response time (Farzandipour et al 2020).…”
