Technical Solutions for Local Service Insertion in DVB-NGH Single Frequency Networks

Abstract: For both techniques, the transmission of local content through the whole SFN network can be scheduled in a way that different local areas do not interfere with each other. In addition to the description of both H-LSI and O-LSI schemes, the applicability of these approaches in terms of network topologies, implementation issues and performance evaluation are analyzed.

“…Although the figure shows a specific LSA overlapping with two other LSAs, all K LSAs can overlap with each other in general. For the local content, O-LSI [13] allots mutually orthogonal sets of sub-carriers to the LSAs. Conversely, for the global content, the sub-carrier set for GSA will be shared throughout all LSAs.…”

“…The orthogonal local content insertion (O-LSI) scheme [13] implements frequency reuse for the local contents with subbands of the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) spectrum. Both the global and local contents can have equal coverage in this scheme.…”

“…The DVB-NGH standards [12] recommend a local content insertion strategy known as hierarchical local service insertion (H-LSI) [13]. It employs hierarchical modulation [14], a technique where a low priority (LP) bit stream is combined with a high priority (HP) bit stream by imposing a secondary constellation on top of the basic primary constellation [15].…”

“…In streaming service data, DVB-NGH uses RoHC (Robust Header Compression) method to reduce the overhead due to IP encapsulation, additional satellite component for increased coverage area, improved signaling robustness [5]. DVB-NGH allows efficient transmission of local services within enhanced Single-Frequency Network (eSFN) [11]. DVB-NGH improves SFN planning flexibility in the 4K mode [12].…”
