Techniques for nonlinear optical characterization of materials: a review

Abstract: Various techniques to characterize the nonlinear (NL) optical response of centro-symmetric materials are presented and evaluated with emphasis on the relationship between the macroscopic measurable quantities and the microscopic properties of photonic materials. NL refraction and NL absorption of the materials are the phenomena of major interest. The dependence of the NL refraction and NL absorption coefficients on the nature of the materials was studied as well as on the laser excitation characteristics of wa… Show more

“…The area is still very active and studies of MDNCs based on glasses and colloids were reported by many authors concerning the NL behavior of other metals than silver and gold as well as other NP geometries. The two NL optical techniques mostly used were the pump-and-probe and the Z-scan technique in various versions, as described in [79]. Although the environment influence has not been much considered, its influence may be one of the reasons for scattering of the values reported for silver and gold MDNCs.…”

“…To certify the fast NL response of the MDNCs, a Kerr shutter experiment [79,211] was performed under the same conditions used in previous experiments. Figure 17(d) shows the Kerr shutter signal due to the fast NL response of the free electrons in the NPs.…”

“…38 The improved technique of greater signal sensibility can be used to measure the nonlinear absorption and refraction at the same time. Another vital advantage of the technique is that it can extract information about both the magnitude and the sign of the nonlinear coefcients simultaneously with only one-laser-shot 39 without the necessarity of scanning of the sample as that of the Z-scan method. 40 Although the method was initially developed to measure the nonlinear refraction index of the materials, it can simultaneously measure the nonlinear refraction index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of materials conveniently from the analysis of three experiment images.…”

“…But these organic crystals have large optical absorption, less thermal and mechanical stability which makes them unsuitable for non-linear optical applications [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Intramolecular charge transfer and strong π-electron delocalization determines the non-linear properties of organic molecules.…”
