Technological Properties of Ceramic Slurries Based on Silicon Carbide with Poly(vinyl alcohol) Addition for Shell Moluds Fabrication in Precision Casting Process

Abstract: In this work technological properties of ceramic slurries based on silicon carbide powder with solid content 70 wt% were presented. These slurries were prepared for obtaining shell moulds in precision casting of Ni superalloys engine parts. The main binder was dispersion containing nanoalumina particles. Additionally poly(vinyl alcohol) with molecular weight 26000 g/mol as 5 wt% water solution was used as a rheological modifier. To characterize silicon carbide: scanning electron microscopy images, chemical com… Show more

“…Several other binders are used in the manufacture of ceramic casting moulds, but their use is limited for various reasons. An example is the Imerys binder containing nano-Al 2 O 3 (Evonik, Germany), which has been applied in creating Y 2 O 3 moulding sands intended for casting mould relief layers, moulding sands, and moulds [44][45][46][47][48][49][50].…”

“…Additionally, ceramics is a material susceptible to impact due to its high brittleness and low resistance to mechanical and thermal shocks. Thanks to its properties, this material has been used in metallurgy [12], the energy sector [13], space industry [14,15], nuclear energy sector [16],…”

“…On the contrary, colloidal silicas such as Remasol are non-toxic and non-flammable. Therefore, ZKE binder should be withdrawn from the modern foundry practice and replaced with more effective water systems providing better quality of shell molds [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18].…”
