A Scoping Review of Visual Aids in Teaching Literature to EFL Students

Using visual aids is known as an effective teaching approach with which to support EFL learning. Existing research on the interaction of EFL literature teaching and visual aids is fragmented and lacks a systematic overview. To address this research gap, the current study conducted a scoping review in order to provide a full knowledge of the use of visual aids in EFL literature classes. This synthesis provided an overview of instructional strategies of using visual aids in EFL literature teaching, and also included student feedback, the use of various forms of visual aids such as charts, photos, videos, and more. By offering a scoping review, the purpose of this research is to improve understanding of the application of visual aids in EFL literature education, thereby contributing to the advancement of innovative and effective teaching approaches in EFL English literature teaching.

This research examines the effects of the implementation of an educational programme of mindfulness training using Virtual Reality (VR) with students in adapted vocational training. The aim of this programme is to instruct and strengthen attention and self-regulation skills in relation to the learning process, with the objective of reducing anxiety and impulsivity in students, contributing to promoting sustainability in education, as well as reducing inequalities. The development and implementation of this project was carried out in IES Teguise in Lanzarote (Spain) with 11 students with intellectual disabilities who used the Virtual Reality Mindfulness application called TRIPP for three months. The use of Virtual Reality offers immersive experiences, while mindfulness enables concentration, which directly contributes to higher academic performance. After the implementation of the programme, it is observed that the use of this emerging technology provides students with a sense of calm and well-being, which translates into improvements in their academic grades, promoting equal and quality education in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Virtual Reality (VR) has seen increasing popularity in the twenty-first century, including in the field of language learning. Considerable studies on VR have explored mainly its advantages and disadvantages for language learning. However, a gap existed about the influential factors considered in incorporating VR technology, particularly for English language learning in higher education settings. Therefore, this study aimed to 1) identify important factors that influence the application of VR technology; 2) provide a systematic review of literature on the implementation categories of VR; and 3) discuss the challenges and opportunities of VR use for English language learning in higher education. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted by reviewing articles retrieved from 2018 to 2023 using a digital database library and filtered systematically using exclusion and inclusion criteria. The result showed that advanced technology, teaching and learning facilitation, and effectiveness in language learning were three major factors influencing VR implementation, which were categorized under three key elements: models, frameworks, or approaches. The study also found out that the cost of procurement and maintenance as well as lack of technical skills were the main challenges of VR use; however, the technology offered opportunities such as reducing learners’ anxiety, increasing their motivation, facilitating immersive and interactive learning experiences, developing English skills, and improving the quality of language education. It is suggested that further research and development efforts should focus on overcoming the challenges to unlock the full potential of VR technology in education
