Abstract-5G networks will impose network operators to accommodate services demanding heterogeneous and stringent requirements in terms of increased bandwidth, reduced latency, higher availability, etc. as well as enabling emerging capabilities such as slicing. Operators will be then forced to make notable investments in their infrastructure but the revenue is not envisaged to be proportional. Thereby, operators are seeking for more cost-effective solutions to keep their competitiveness. An appealing solution is to integrate all (broadband) services including both fixed and mobile in a convergent way. This is referred to as Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC). FMC allows seamlessly serving any kind of access service over the same network infrastructure (access, aggregation and core) and relying on common set of control and operation functions. To this end, FMC leverages the benefits provided by Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). First, we discuss some of the explored FMC solutions and technologies, from both structural and functional perspectives Next, focusing on a Multi-Layer (Packet and Optical) Aggregation Network, we report two implemented and experimentally validated SDN/NFV orchestration architectures providing feasible FMC to address upcoming 5G challenges.

Expand or Oversize? Planning Internet Access Network in a Demand Growth Scenario

Internet network design specialists are looking for technologies and strategies to deliver network service under increased demand conditions. The choice of strategies is based on applying optimization and decision-making methods to select the most appropriate cable network design considering criteria established by the problem definition. However, this definition is itself a decision problem that has not received analysis in the literature. In particular, one of the most important questions is the necessity to define an expansion strategy. The first alternative (expansion) is to design a network to serve consumers with Internet demand equal to or greater than the predefined one to expand the network annually to serve consumers that reach the predefined Internet speed. The second alternative (oversizing) is to design a network to serve consumers with future Internet demand (after 5 years) at or above that the predefined one. Considering this, the objective of this research is to define the most advantageous strategy of expansion planning to attend a 5 years forecasted Internet demand, considering: (1) the possibility of utilizing a Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network technology; (2) the application of the minimal Steiner tree and Dijkstra algorithms in planning procedures; (3) the influence of economic and technological factors on the demand forecast; (4) the aggressive, moderate, and conservative scenarios in decision-making. The results show that the over-dimensioning strategy reduces network investment by between 30 and 41%, but that this reduction does not always lead to a market investment ratio higher than that observed in the expansion strategy.

Most of today's cloud applications are delivered by Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) on top of a physical network managed by one or multiple Infrastructure Providers (InPs). This new way of delivering services is impacting InPs' revenues, as InPs are only responsible for transporting data to users. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) was proposed to help InPs gain more flexibility in provisioning new services over their networks, hence achieving lower capital and operational costs, keeping stable revenue margins, and resisting the competition of CSPs (e.g., the "Over-The-Top"players). NFV aims at moving from the traditional approach of network functions running over dedicated hardware (e.g., firewall, NAT, etc.) into virtualized software modules running on top of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment. However, deploying NFV in an operational network requires addressing two fundamental problems. The first consists on determining the locations where Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) will be hosted (i.e., VNF placement) and the second on how to properly steer network traffic to traverse the required VNFs in the right order (i.e, routing), thus provisioning network services in the form of Service Function Chains (SFCs). In this work we try to solve both problems focusing our analysis on a metro-regional scenario, where link bandwidth and COTS node processing capacity is inherently limited and where the current trend consists on moving towards a Fixed and Mobile Convergence (FMC) network infrastructure. We propose and compare different heuristic strategies for SFC provisioning, characterized by latency and/or capacity awareness (i.e., able to best exploit latency of links and/or processing capacity of COTS nodes for an effective placement of VNFs) and by the adoption of a load balancing policy for traffic routing, with
