Technology based training for radar image interpreters

Abstract: This document describes the need of training tools for radar image interpreters. Concepts, methods and solutions for supporting technology based training are presented and demonstrated by means of two examples: SAR-Tutor is a computer based training software for learning the basic principles of radar image interpretation. ViSAR is a simulator for exploring and understanding geometrical effects which occur in radar images. The interaction of these two tools and their use in operational training scenarios are ex… Show more

“…Among the enhancement techniques, the histogram technique is considered valid because of their inherent properties to adapt to the situations and applications in hand. This technique is widely used in daily photo enhancement, medical image analysis, remote-sensing imagery, microscopic imaging [9], and many other areas [10][11][12][13][14]. Histogram equalization (HE) [15] is most extensively utilized for contrast enhancement.…”

“…The interpretation of aerial and satellite images poses a wide range of challenges because of different imagery sensor types, difficult image material or unknown objects. Professional image interpretation is done in various fields, ranging from the microscopic level in medicine, e.g., diagnostics in histopathology, to the macroscopic level of aerial or satellite images, e.g., civilian applications like search-and-rescue, agriculture, oceanography, or military intelligence acquisition (Roller et al, 2013). Image interpretation requires the detection, recognition, identification and analysis of structures and objects, according to a given task based on optical, infrared and radar imagery.…”
