The misalignment of information systems (IS) components with the rest of an organization remains a critical and chronic unsolved problem in today's complex and turbulent world. This paper argues that the coevolutionary and emergent nature of alignment has rarely been taken into consideration in IS research and that this is the reason behind why IS alignment is so difficult. A view of IS alignment is presented about organizations that draws and builds on complexity theory and especially its focus on coevolution-based selforganized emergent behaviour and structure, which provides important insights for dealing with the emergent nature of IS alignment. This view considers Business/IS alignment as a series of adjustments at three levels of analysis: individual, operational, and strategic, and suggests several enabling conditions -principles of adaptation and scale-free dynamicsaimed at speeding up the adaptive coevolutionary dynamics among the three levels.

Intelligent agents can be used as agents of organizational change. This potential exists in the domain of accounting audit, where much of what is currently done manually in batch mode could be done continuously and on-line. We discuss the use of intelligent Internet agents as a way of changing and expanding audit practices in the virtual world. A quality/service framework is presented that suggests ways that accounting firms can evolve in this era of on-line opportunities. The EDGAR Agent is presented as an example of an intelligent Internet agent that gathers financial information. The challenges involved in the development of the EDGAR agent are analyzed, providing insight into the practical aspects of agent technology designed for a specific business domain. Closeness in meaning of the terms in the information systems and software engineering may result in discussion of using proper affiliated terms while covering the scope of research. An example is touched in this exploratory study, which discusses flexibility and its affiliated terms: changeability, adaptability, compatibility, flexibility, expandability, extendibility, extensibility and portability. A risk of misinterpretation due to the variety of the usage of the term is noted whereas the adoption of the term has shown that the literature does not have such examples to a serious level; but this review informs about missing discussions in the research reports in the literature due to omitting or ignoring affiliated terms of the keywords.Another product of this paper is to provide basis for future studies in the flexibility as a quality factor in the software measurement.
