Technology of Artificial Deposit Preservation at the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly

Abstract: An evaluation of existing insulation and remediation technologies for solid mineral waste storages is carried out. Results of field observations at one of the largest tailings in Russia are given. A quality of atmospheric air, and surface and ground water are estimated in the impact areas of a magnetic separation waste storage at an iron ore deposit of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly. An effective method of landfill's surface insulation using polymeric materials is offered. The technological insulation process by m… Show more

“…The full-scale monitoring of a magnetic separation tailings pond at an iron ore deposit in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly reveals elevated concentrations of harmful elements in atmospheric air and in surface and ground water in the influence zones of the waste storage. The method developed for the pond surface isolation with polymeric materials can stop the water and wind erosion and can improve the ecological situation in this locality [14]. The issues connected with reduction of toxic gases and mineral dust emission are addressed at the open pit mines in Kuzbass and at the overburden dumps piled at iron ore deposits in the Kursk and Belgorod Regions.…”

“…The model of sustainable development of the mining industry requires the responsible land use and restoration of affected soils (Androkhanov et al, 2019;Cao, 2007;Danilov et al, 2017;Isakov & Barygina, 2017;Ivanov et al, 2018;Pashkevich & Petrova, 2016). In a wide sense, reclamation is a set of works aimed at restoring the productivity and economic value of disturbed lands, as well as improving environmental conditions in harmony with the benefits of society.…”

“…During open pit mining or when mining ore with a low content of valuable constituents, large volumes of waste rock are formed, which are placed in surface storage in the mining area. Moreover, they contain a large amount of associated components [1,2], which pose a threat in the process of long-term oxidation and weathering. It creates environmental issues in terms of land degradation, air and water pollution, etc.…”
