The horizontal wells drilled during the last few years are coming to a mature state in different fields and locations. Even the existing vertical wells are being converted to horizontal for better oil sweep and productivity. This has created the requirement to evaluate the production performance of horizontal wells to determine water source for proper monitoring and/or a remedial action.The conventional conveyance methods for the horizontal production logging tool (PLT) are either coiled tubing (CT) or E-line using a tractor. These methods satisfactorily perform in conventional horizontal wells, however, operational limitations and challenges could be encountered when the horizontal section is more complicated due to extended reach, big and inconsistent washouts and high dogleg severity. These types of challenges can prevent the passage of the logging tools to the desired depth. This has an adverse effect on both data quality and accessibility to the well's total depth (TD). Accordingly, a lot of effort is being exerted by oil companies, service providers and vendors to improve the conveying performance of logging tools using wireline tractors.An electro-hydraulic tractor with wheels was introduced and deployed for the first time in the world using mono-cable logging tractor technology into several horizontal open hole wells in a Saudi Arabian field. The wells were drilled in a carbonate formation with long horizontal sections and were producing at high rates. This tool was run as an integral part with the logging tool to help cover the entire horizontal section and reach TD while logging.The logging jobs using this new technique were completed safely and successfully at flowing and shut-in conditions. At flowing condition, the logging tool was successfully conveyed to TD and measurements were made over the entire horizontal section with the help of the tractor. The well was logged at different choke settings while measurements were taken at down passes (while tractoring) and up passes. The tractor was running at a constant speed and was able to pass a long washout of around 9" in diameter. The data analysis showed very acceptable measurements. This paper will describe the case histories, challenges, planning, deployment and advantages/disadvantages of this type of tractor.

A light weight intervention technique utilizing electric wireline has emerged as an alternative to existing well intervention methods. Tractor technology enables high speed, low HSE impact and a high degree of precision in production enhancing interventions in onshore and offshore wells. Wireline tractor technology eliminates the limitation on traditional wireline by extending the reach of the wireline into a high angle or horizontal part of the well bore, enabling access to the entire length of the well.Interventions in challenging conditions such as subsea, deepwater, extended reach, high-yield, heavy oil and deepwater are also enabled whether the hole angles are highly deviated or not. For instance, where slick line or coiled tubing (CT) operations below 20,000 ft can be risky and costly, tractor technology offers a time and costefficient alternative for valve manipulation, sand clean out and scale milling. Furthermore, interventions have been performed in high temperature wells (388°F), high pressure (>20,000 psi), ERD wells (>30K ft) and high deviations (130°) wells.Wireline tractor services can be mobilized in a matter of hours and only require a crew of from two to four people, depending on the operation. Transportation can be done in a helicopter to avoid the cost and time of mobilizing a full CT spread such as when cleaning and milling operations are performed without surface fluid handling logistics. Further, lightweight interventions with tractor technology combined with low surface impact left on the environment, allows mobilizations in eco-sensitive regions where heavy methods are not permitted due to the irreversible environmental damage that would be caused. This paper will present case studies where the HSE impact was significantly reduced by employing lightweight intervention techniques through tractor related mechanical services. One case will be a recent operation of milling barium sulfate scale on electric wireline and removing the cuttings in the same run in the hole. The second case will be milling out a cast iron bridge plug on electric wireline and the third will highlight the world's first wireline tractor intervention from a subsea intervention ship, which provided a much lighter solution for the operator.

Crane, space and height restrictions often pose problems when it comes to traditional intervention methods; adding daylight requirements, which are often a result of such platform restrictions, makes interventions even more challenging. When slickline jarring failed to remove a lock mandrel despite more than 300 attempts, an operator on a platform, offshore India's East Coast, turned to an alternative solution on electric line (e-line). The well was being converted into an injector to facilitate pressure support for producing wells in a marginal field, but injection was not possible due to a choked ‘thru tubing sand screen’ (TTSS), placed through a 3.5 in. lock mandrel set on a 3.5 in. sliding sleeve door (SSD) nipple. Thorough risk assessment and testing was conducted onshore to prepare for this region's first operation; however, the first run revealed that the GS profile couldn't latch on to the lock mandrel due to debris settled on top of the TTSS. A readily available clean-out solution was quickly mobilized and arrived within 12 hours. This clean-out tool incorporated a high volume suction technology and bailer sections to remove debris. Around half a liter of debris was removed allowing the subsequent run with an electric-over-hydraulic stroking ram to retrieve the lock mandrel without further complications. Using e-line with the right blend of technology provided cost-effective management for the project and thus avoided a barge-based coiled tubing (CT) or workover rig operation involving much higher risks and costs. Post retrieving the TTSS, the well was put on injection successfully with around 22,000 barrels of water per day (BWPD) injection rate against zero injectivity prior to the operation. This paper will report the first ever attempt of releasing a lock mandrel using e-line in the Asia Pacific region. It will review the job planning, project management, trouble shooting and execution, as well as report the lessons learned to derive best practice considerations for future operations.
