TechnoWellness: A New Wellness Construct in the 21st Century

Abstract: Researchers in various disciplines have investigated how interaction with technology affects health and well-being, but evidence-based wellness models in counseling do not currently address the implications of technology use. The new concept of TechnoWellness encourages recognition that individuals' interactions with technology can have powerful impacts on holistic wellness over the life span. “…Immersive interactive technologies have, so far, mainly been developed for applications such as entertainment and training. However, the potential for these technologies is vast and we are beginning to see the direction of the field shift toward more experiences of supporting positive human functioning and change (Fogg, 1999 ; Schiphorst, 2009 ; Sander, 2011 ; Riva et al, 2012 ; Brown, 2013 ; Desmet and Pohlmeyer, 2013 ; Kennedy, 2014 ; Buie, 2016 ; Gaggioli, 2016 ; Mossbridge, 2016 ). There are similar, yet separate, movements from different domains such as HCI, Psychology, and Computer Science all going toward this same goal of designing and creating technologies that support positive human functioning (Norman and Draper, 1986 ; Weiser and Brown, 1996 ; Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, 2014 ).…”

“…One difference is that Positive Computing (Sander, 2011 ; Calvo and Peters, 2014 ) uses an engineering lens for considering well-being in any technology either as preventative or active integration, whereas Positive Technology (Riva et al, 2012 ) uses a psychological lens for considering technology as a platform for supporting and sustaining well-being and the process of change. TechnoWellness (Kennedy, 2014 ) emerged in response to Positive Technology, arguing that Positive Technology was missing key factors for holistic wellness based on a counseling perspective that uses the IS-Wel model (Myers and Sweeney, 2005 ). The IS-Wel model, or Indivisible Self Model of Wellness, integrates both the model of the Indivisible-Self and the five factor Wellness Wheel.…”

“…As time progressed, models began to evolve and new models surfaced. While these wellness models provide a strong historical lens to understanding how wellness was both viewed and examined, modern day research highlights aspects of said models that have not been adapted to reflect the advance of time, specifically regarding the role technology and the environment can play (Kennedy, 2014;Reese & Myers, 2012). Literature also highlighted the development of wellness intervention and initiatives as ways for workplaces and organizations to address issues of wellness of employees.…”

“…They coined the term "ecowellness" to include the missing aspect of wellness models that focuses on the positive contribution to wellness that nature plays. Kennedy (2014) provided another critique of current wellness models. Highlighting the omission of the impact technology use has on wellness.…”
