“…We use the characterization “soft” to describe a diffused tectonic boundary, not marked by a discrete fault zone, but consisting of multiple, smaller and scattered faults which individually accommodate most of the region's deformation. These faults are mainly pure ∼E‐W normal structures onshore western Turkey, and as we approach the Turkish coasts and move westwards offshore, the typical pure ∼E‐W normal faults coexist with conjugate ∼NE‐SW strike‐slip structures (Aktar et al., 2007; Aktuğ et al., 2009; Uzel et al., 2013; Yilmaz & Gürer, 2023). This diffuse zone of deformation and the faults that receive it could possibly reflect the fact that the Aegean microplate and the Anatolian plate are not separated in a straightforward way, that is, by means of a well‐defined tectonic boundary, but with this wide transition zone which accommodates the curved stretching of the entire plate system whose direction and rate of motion changes as we pass from the westward moving Anatolian plate to the faster and SW moving Aegean microplate.…”
