ABSTRACT
Aim:The term adolescent describes transition childhood to maturity and adolescent pregnancies create very important health problem in all of countries in the world. In terms of maternal and fetal problems, pregnant adolescent are in high risk pregnancy category. In our study, we aimed to compare obstetrics and neonatal results of adolescent and non-adolescent pregnancies in our hospital.
Material and Methods:In our study, pregnancy and birth records of both under 19 year old and between 20 and 29 years old pregnants, who gave birth over 20 months at the same period and were refered to our hospital, were retrospectively examined. Obstetrics results (type of delivery, birth weight) and obstetrics complications (preterm birth, fetal anomaly, eclampsia) are compared. Results: There were 256 participants in the adolescent group and 772 participants in the non-adolescent group. Adolescent women who gave birth in an average of 34.92±4.59 pregnancy week and non-adolescent women gave birth in an average of 35.71±4.25 pregnancy week (p <0.05). Eclampsia development was more common in the adolescent group (p<0.05). In adolescent group, vaginal birth ratio was higher than the caesarean section (p<0.05). The weight of babies was significantly decreasing with the decreased ages (p<0.05). There was no difference in the development of fetal anomalies (p<0.05).
Conclusion:The significant rates of perinatal morbidity and mortality risks are increasing for those pregnant. Health workers dealing with maternal and child health need to be alert of antenatal monitoring and risks are increasing for those pregnants in case adolescent pregnancy occurs.
