Telecytology and its evolving role in cytopathology

Abstract: The advancement of telecommunication technology in the area of digital transfer of images form distant site has resulted in exploration of this technology in the area of cytopathology. Telecytology facilitates the electronic transmission of microscopic images using static, dynamic, and whole slide imaging systems. Recent articles have generated an interest in the use of this technology for immediate assessment of fine-needle aspirations. Telecytology has potential for use in second opinion, quality assurance, … Show more

“…Studies are emerging describing the use of telecytology with ROSE and show promising initial results. [7][8][9][10][11] The level of evaluation given at the time of ROSE is variable and depends on the individual providing the service. The majority of CTs in this survey provide an adequacy assessment, but the respondents to this survey may not be representative of all practice settings.…”

“…However, a number of significant weaknesses of the current WSI scanners, such as the difficulties in focusing at different z-axes, are a major limitation for the introduction of this technology in routine diagnosis [50,51]. Improvements in informatics may allow multiplane focusing using the z-axis, but they still need to be validated [21,52,53].…”

“…[9][10][11][12] Indeed, in both surgical pathology and cytopathology, [13][14][15] digital pathology is poised to do no less than ''redefine how pathology is practiced and the role of the pathologist.'' 16 Of course, substantial challenges accompany the establishment of digital pathology, including technical and workflow issues, standardization, and whole-slide imaging validation, and these are currently being addressed by the College of American Pathologists and other organizations.…”
