Telemedicine Applications for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Research is still needed to see whether clinical outcomes are improved with pediatric emergency telemedicine solutions. Practical issues regarding training, accessibility, and resource allocation should be explored as pediatric emergency telemedicine evolves.

“…The use of telemedicine in rural settings is being explored by the EMSC's State Partnership Regionalization of Care grants in California, New Mexico, and Montana, which are working to expand telehealth networks to provide pediatric emergency care and training to providers residing in rural, frontier, and tribal areas. For example, New Mexico has created a Child Ready Virtual Pediatric Emergency Department Telehealth Network in order to connect pediatric patients, residing in geographically isolated regions, to the right care, at the right time, right in their community . Other model policies and procedures exist for triaging children, pediatric assessment and reassessment, managing pediatric mental health care, and handling the death of a child in the ED .…”

“…Few emergency departments (EDs) are fully equipped to manage pediatric emergency conditions . Pediatric emergency telemedicine consultations can address this issue by providing on‐demand, synchronous videoconferencing between community ED clinicians and specialty hospital pediatricians . Such consultations can offer education, assistance, and reassurance to community physicians, thus improving care and disposition decisions and preventing some unnecessary transfers .…”
