Telephone Surveys Underestimate Cigarette Smoking among African-Americans

Abstract: Background: This study tested the hypothesis that data from random digit-dial telephone surveys underestimate the prevalence of cigarette smoking among African-American adults.Method: A novel, community-sampling method was used to obtain a statewide, random sample of N = 2118 California (CA) African-American/Black adults, surveyed door-to-door. This Black community sample was compared to the Blacks in the CA Health Interview Survey (N = 2315), a statewide, random digit-dial telephone survey conducted simultane… Show more

“…Some national surveys have traditionally used lists of landline phone numbers as their sampling frames. Landrine and colleagues questioned the use of random digit dialed telephone surveys among African Americans; as they found smoking prevalence was greater than 45% for African American men and women who were phoneless or cellphone only in their study conducted in California 43 . The BRFSS found including cellphone only households in their sample increased the number of people who were younger, of lower socioeconomic status, and belonged to a minority group, including African Americans 44 , 45 .…”

“…Of greatest concern is that REM RDDTS samples underestimate the contribution of SES to racial–ethnic health disparities by excluding the poorest and least educated REMs. For example, in a recent study ( 222 ), we compared the demographics and cigarette smoking of a random, statewide, California (CA) sample of black adults surveyed door to door in person ( N = 2218), to those of a random, statewide, CA RDDTS (i.e., CHIS) sample of blacks ( N = 2315) acquired simultaneously. Results revealed that the in-person black sample was significantly younger, poorer, and less-educated than the RDDTS sample, and had significantly higher smoking prevalence, 32.6% (in-person sample) vs. 19.1% (RDDTS sample), even when controlling for demographics.…”

“…Other studies have revealed that REMs are more likely than whites to refuse to participate in RDDTS (with response rates ranging from 0.2 to 10%), and that REMs who reside in segregated areas are less likely to be phoned and less likely to participate if telephoned ( 202 , 222 , 223 ).…”

“…Cellular data has been added to the BRFSS since 2011. In addition, people in self‐reported phone surveys have a known bias to underreport negative behaviors . Finally, the BRFSS surveys adults over the age of 18 years.…”
