Tellurite Glass: A New Acousto-Optic Material

Abstract: A new glass, composed of TeO2, was found to be well suited to acousto-optical devices. It exhibits a high figure of merit: Me(p2n6/ρv3) = 23.9×10−18 sec3/g and has very good optical qualities with regard to visible light.

“…TeO 2 -based samples were provided from another laboratory. These samples used are hardly colored, though the glass containing TeO 2 is often pale yellowish [8]. Commercially available TeO 2 -based glasses with Codes STM099 and ST032 glasses are purchased from ASAHI GLASS Co., Ltd.…”

“…In particular, TeO 2 glass is potentially useful for many different applications in the field of active and passive devices for the processing of optical beams. It presents the highest acousto-optic effects among amorphous materials [1,2], as well as elevated optical nonlinearity, conjugated to transparency in the visible and near infrared ranges of the optical spectrum and relatively low chromatic dispersion [3]. Besides, it is a mostly efficient host for rare-earth dopant ions, to serve as an active medium for optical amplification [4][5][6].…”

“…In the present work, using Campbell's thoery [4], the SAW properties including wave modes, TCD, and electromechanical coupling coefficients are theoretically studied. The density, the elastic constants of amorphous TeO 2 are given by T.Yano et al [5] which are listed in Table 1. The constants of LiNbO 3 are those given by Smith et al [6] The electromechanical coupling coefficient 2 K and the temperature coefficient of delay are given by the following equations respectively:…”
