Telomeres and Telomerase During Human Papillomavirus-Induced Carcinogenesis

Abstract: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) belong to a small spherical virus family and are transmitted through direct contact, most often through sexual behavior. More than 200 types of HPV are known, a dozen or so of which are classified as high-risk viruses (HR HPV) and may contribute to the development of cervical cancer. HPV is a small virus with a capsid composed of L1 and L2 proteins, which are crucial for entry to the cell. The infection begins at the basal cell layer and progresses to involve cells from higher lay… Show more

“…To improve the efficiency of early diagnosis programs for CC, the use of cellular and viral markers has been proposed to increase the sensitivity of screening and reduce the false-negative rate. Several biomarkers have been suggested, including p16 INK4A , [ 7 ], Ki-67 [ 8 ], proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) [ 9 ], p21, cyclin-D, cyclin-E [ 8 ], minichromosome maintenance protein-2 (MCM2) and DNA Topoisomerase II α (TOP2A) [ 10 , 11 ], and telomerase [ 12 ].…”

“…In recent decades, HPV studies on therapeutic strategies have proposed several options, including the role of HPV E6 and E7 oncogenes. Considering that the progression to cervical malignancy requires the overexpression of E6 and E7 genes of integrated HPV genome, we further investigated whether this antiviral biologic inhibits the expression of E6 and E7 viral genes. Seventy‐two hours after the application of different concentration of REBACIN® to TC‐1 and Hela cells stably expression of HPV E6/E7, the transcription level of HPV E6/E7 mRNA was examined via RT‐PCR.…”

“…chen et al (36) observed that TriM14 was upregulated upon viral infection and to recruit the deubiquitinating enzyme ubiquitin specific peptidase 14 to revert degradative ubiquitination of cGaS, improving its stability and enhancing the antiviral response against herpes simplex virus-1. HPV is a spherical dna virus that can cause the proliferation of squamous epithelium of human skin and mucous membranes (37). High-risk HPV infection is closely related to the incidence of cervical cancer (38).…”
