TEM observations of a rapidly solidified Al–20 Sb alloy

Abstract: In the present work, the microstructural characterization of a melt-spun Al-20 Sb alloy has been carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phases present in the melt-spun Al-20 Sb alloy were determined to be ␣-Al and AlSb, identical to those in the ingot-cast alloy. The microstructure of the melt-spun Al-20 Sb alloy is dominantly composed of primary AlSb dendrites embedded in the ␣-Al matrix, different from that of the ingot-cast alloy composed of primary AlSb pl… Show more

“…Sb in the form of Al-Sb master alloys is extensively used as an alternative to Na or Sr in the production of Al-Si alloys by the permanent mold process. In the industrial practice, Sb is often added to the Al-Si melts in the form of Al-Sb master alloy [19,20]. It has been also reported that Sb results in fine lamellar morphology of eutectic silicon [21].…”

“…Attentions are also paid to antimony using as an addition to Al alloys. In industrial practice, Sb is always used as an addition to Al-Si alloys in the form of Al-Sb master alloys [4]. It has been found that Sb can effectively refine the large size eutectic silicon needles to fine fibrous or lamellar at relatively high cooling rates, providing a low susceptibility to gassing and excellent casting properties.…”

“…Tashlykova-Bushkevich and Shepelevich [19] investigated the dope depth distribution in rapidly solidified Al-Ge and Al-Me (Me = Fe, Cu, Sb) alloys using the Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy technique. In our former work [20,21], the microstructure of rapidly solidified Al-5Sb and Al-20Sb alloys was characterized. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of quenching rate on the microstructure of the rapidly solidified Al-5Sb alloy.…”
