In tasks involving response choice based on certain stimulus-to-response mappings, at least two stages of information processing may be involved: (1) formation of sensory stimulus object representations leading to stimulus identification, and (2) application of stimulus-to-response mappings (i.e. "task rules") to these representations leading to response selection. Most of the research done in this area involved simple reflex-like stimulus-to-response mappings, thus addressing mostly the perceptual aspect of decision making. Here we used the condensation task, which involves more complex stimulus-to-response mappings. Within each subject, we divided participants' responses into four conditions depending upon performance speed and accuracy: fast correct, fast erroneous, slow correct and slow erroneous responses. We compared event-related potentials between these conditions. We found that P2 amplitude was related to performance accuracy, the effect being evident for fast but not for slow responses. N2 amplitude was increased for slow responsesboth correct and erroneous. We suggest that fast errors result mostly from erroneous sensory representations that immediately become translated into actions in conditions of low motor threshold. On the contrary, slow responses happen in conditions of low executive attention, through reevaluation of sensory representations and invocation of cognitive control process via the mechanisms of response conflict detection.

Association Between the Visual N1-P2 Complex and Neuroticism

Neuroticism is a personality trait associated with impaired attention, memory, and error detection. Thus, the present study investigated the visual N100 and P200 event-related potentials components associated with attention using a 2-back working memory task in healthy neurotic and nonneurotic participants, evaluated using the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Five Factor Inventory. A total of 35 healthy participants were asked to perform the 2-back task while recording electroencephalographic activity from 64 electrodes on the scalp. Analysis of the N100 and P200 amplitude and latency in high neuroticism and low neuroticism subjects showed an increased P200 amplitude and latency for high neuroticism subjects in the frontal and parietal regions, respectively. However, there were no significant performance differences between the high and low neuroticism subjects for the 2-back working memory task. Therefore, the results suggest that neuroticism is associated with the P200 component elicited in the context of a working memory task.

This review explores several rarely discussed examples illustrating constructivism principles, generative and selective features of neuronal regulation of behaviour. First, the review highlights Walter Freeman’s experiments and mathematical analysis that uncovered the existence of anticipatory attractors, i.e. non-random dynamical patterns in neurodynamics. Since Freeman’s work did not extend to neurochemistry, this paper then points to the proposed earlier neurochemical framework summarizing the managerial roles of monoaminergic, cholinergic and opioid receptor systems likely contributing to anticipatory attractors in line with functional constructivism. As a third example, neurochemistry’s evidence points to the “Throw & Catch” (T&C) principle in neurodynamics. This principle refers to the pro-active, neurochemically expensive, massive but topical increase of potentials (“Throw”) within electrodynamics and neurotransmission in the brain whenever there is an uncertainty in selection of degrees of freedom (DFs). The T&C also underlines the relay-like processes during the selection of DFs. The “Throw” works as an internally generated “flashlight” that, contrarily to the expectations of entropy reduction, increases entropy and variance observed in processes related to orientation and action-formation. The discussed examples highlight the deficiency of structures-oriented projects and excitation-inhibition concepts in neuroscience. The neural regulation of behaviour appears to be a fluid, constructive process, constantly upgrading the choice of behavioural DFs, to ensure the compatibility between the environmental and individual’s individuals’ needs and capacities.
