Temperament and Problematic Alcohol Use in Adolescence: an Examination of Drinking Motives as Mediators

Abstract: The present study investigated the associations between temperamental reactivity, drinking motives, alcohol consumption and alcohol-related consequences. Furthermore, it investigated whether drinking motives mediate the relations between temperamental reactivity and the alcohol use variables. The sample consisted of 188 adolescents (64.9% boys) between the ages of 13-20 years (M age 016.9, SD01.32). Results revealed that the temperament factors of high BAS fun seeking and high negative affectivity were related… Show more

“…Coping with anxiety was endorsed at a higher rate than coping with depression in this study, which is consistent with previous studies utilizing the Modified DMQ-R (Grant et al, 2007;Willem, Bijttebier, Claes, & Uytterhaegen, 2012).…”

“…Galera et al, 2010; Gunnarsson, Gustavsson, Tengstrom, Franck, & Fahlke, 2008; Willem, Bijttebier, Claes, & Uytterhaegen, 2012). There are even hints that negative affectivity can predict decreased substance use (Gunnarsson et al, 2008; Willem et al, 2012). Some of the inconsistencies might stem from the varying ways negative affectivity is conceptualized (Pardini, Lochan, & Wells, 2004) and measured (Colder, 2001).…”

“…Some of the inconsistencies might stem from the varying ways negative affectivity is conceptualized (Pardini, Lochan, & Wells, 2004) and measured (Colder, 2001). For instance, fear, anger, and hostility are all components of negative affectivity, but fear might protect against early substance use, whereas anger and hostility might increase risk (Pardini et al, 2004; Willem et al, 2012). …”

“…Research on outcomes associated with the Conformity motive has been largely inconsistent. Among adolescents, use of alcohol for conformity motives was related to fewer problems (Willem et al, 2012) in some samples, but positively predicted problems in other adolescents who used alcohol (Cooper, 1994; Kuntsche et al, 2008) and cannabis (Fox et al, 2011). Among undergraduates, the relationship between conformity and problems has also been inconsistent (Buckner et al, 2012b; Merrill and Read, 2010; Simons et al, 1998).…”
