“…Over an extended period of time (several days) in air, plasma- AlF 3 unexpectedly converts to a mixture of solid AlF 3 hydrates as observed by ATR-FTIR and powder XRD. This strong affinity for solid AlF 3 to form crystalline hydrates upon exposure to air is not well documented in the AlF 3 literature except in passing . Given the relatively labile nature of H 2 O toward Al 3+ cation versus the fluoride anion and the tendency of plasma-AlF 3 to readily form a hydrate, it would seem that plasma-AlF 3 maintains a deficiency of competing fluoride ligands making up the solid, and suggests the presence of a correspondingly large number of active, coordinatively unsaturated Al sites.…”

“…[1] Among these ceramics, those obtained by ammonolysis, polycondensation, and subsequent pyrolysis of singlesource precursors have been ascribed superior characteristics with respect to resistance to crystallization and homogeneity. [2] The ternary ceramic Si 3 B 3 N 7 and the quaternary ceramic SiBN 3 C are the best studied so far with respect to structural details. [3] A structural characterization of these amorphous systems can only be successful if a combination of characterization methods is used, each predominantly probing the short-, intermediate-, or long-range order.…”
