Temperature and precipitation at specific growth stages influence soybean tocopherol and lutein concentrations

Abstract: Soybean seeds contain several secondary metabolites that have health beneficial properties. Isoflavones have generated considerable interest, but other compounds including tocopherols (toc) and lutein also have commercial value and potential. Tocopherols are natural lipophilic antioxidants with vitamin E biological activity, which are found widely in higher plants. They were reported to have potential in preventing several chronic diseases, including kidney and lung diseases (Hanson et al., 2016;Tasanarong … Show more

“…Climate variability exerts a profound influence on both the magnitude and stability of crop yields [36]. Factors such as sunlight exposure [37][38][39][40], temperature [28], and precipitation [29,41] significantly impact soybean production. In September 2019 (one year before the official trial), this study pre-treated the trial plots using farm machinery and equipment, including deep plowing, fine harrowing, and leveling, to make the condition of the soil in each plot at the time of the experiment essentially the same.…”

“…Additional enzymes and metabolites participated in the antioxidant defense mechanism. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase, peroxiredoxins, and tocopherols are antioxidant enzymes involved in protecting cells from excess ROS (Lin et al, 2010 ; Tang et al, 2021 ). Camelina has shown some resilience to high-temperature stress.…”
