Temperature-Dependent Bionomics and Modeling of Anarsia lineatella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in the Laboratory

Abstract: Laboratory studies were conducted to assess the effect of constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C) on life history traits of peach twig borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Developmental rate, survival, longevity, and fecundity were studied in environmental chambers from individuals reared on peach, Prunus persica L., twigs until adulthood. Temperature-dependent relationships of various developmental events were characterized, and applied models were evaluated. Total dev… Show more

“…Four non-linear models: Taylor-81 [ 31 ], HarcourtYee-82 [ 32 ], Kontodimas-04 [ 33 ], and Damos-08 [ 17 ], were fitted to the observed developmental rates of B. distincta ’s life stages. In all the model equations, rT is the mean developmental rate (1/day), and T (°C) is the temperature ( Table 1 ).…”

“…The model list and the evaluated statistical criteria were provided in Supplementary Material (available online), with the definition of corresponding parameters and the estimated parameter values. Among them, 4 models showed a good performance in terms of the statistical criteria: Lactin model (Lactin et al 1995), cardinal Beta distribution (Yan and Hunt 1999), simplified Beta distribution (Damos and Savopoulou-Soultani 2008), and Gaussian model (Taylor 1981). Gaussian model (Taylor 1981) showed a good performance in the data sets, but it was rejected because of its symmetrical characteristic, which can be a factor causing an overestimation of development rates in high temperatures.…”

“…According to the definition of Logan et al [32] and Damos and Savopoulou-Soultani [33], T m is the thermal maximum, ∆T is the temperature range over which "thermal breakdown" became the overriding influence, and ρ is the composite value for critical enzyme-catalyzed biochemical reactions in insect development.…”
