Temperature‐Induced Nonlinear Elastic Behavior in Berea Sandstone Explained by a Modified Sheared Contacts Model

Abstract: Rocks and other micro-inhomogeneous materials display a range of nonclassical nonlinear elastic behavior in response to a dynamic mechanical perturbation (Guyer & Johnson, 1999;Ostrovsky & Johnson, 2001). This behavior manifests as a reduction in the elastic modulus when the dynamic strain exceeds ∼10 −6 , followed afterward by a logarithmic recovery of the modulus with time, termed slow dynamics (Guyer & Johnson, 1999;TenCate, 2011).
