Temperature sensing in Tb3+/Eu3+-based tetranuclear silsesquioxane cages with tunable emission

Abstract: Tetranuclear silsesquioxane cages with tunable thermosensitive Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer were used for temperature sensing based on the Tb3+-to-Eu3+ emission intensity ratio (LIR) with excellent linearity and sensitivity.

“…These emission lines correspond to the 4f−4f electronic transitions between the first excited nondegenerate 5 D 0 state and the ground-state multiplet 7 F J (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) of the Eu III ion (Figure S10). In contrast, similar to the reported (Ph 4 Si 4 O 8 ) 4− -protected Eu-silsesquioxane cluster, 56,57 no ligand excitation band or ligand-based emission band is observed, indicating that the energy difference of the triplet level of the oligosilane ligand and the emitting level of Eu III is quite large. Nonetheless, the oligosilane ligand can well sensitize the luminescence of Eu III instead of quenching it.…”

“…Based on the discussion above, from the coordination geometry and the topology of Eu13, we can conclude that the (Ph 4 Si 4 O 8 ) 4– ligands have a significant influence on the symmetry and the structure of the Eu cluster. In comparison with (Ph 4 Si 4 O 8 ) 4– - protected tetranuclear Eu-silsesquioxane analogues with a double-decker geometry, , (Ph 4 Si 4 O 8 ) 4– connected with four Eu atoms can be considered as a basic building block for the construction of Eu-silsesquioxane clusters in a different fused mode.…”

“…In the next stage, further increase of phenanthroline loading allowed for the isolation of another intriguing example of CLMS, namely complex 5. In this case, one could identify a cyclic four-membered silsesquioxane ligand, earlier observed for various (Ti(IV)-, 79 Fe(III)-, 80 Co(II)-, 19 Zn(II)-, 25 Cu(II)-, 66 Ln(III)-, 24,32,81 and Mn(II)- 35 ) based CLMS complexes. Despite this, the structural type of 5 is unprecedented because complex 5 represents a cardinally different "open cage" molecular topology (Fig.…”

“…These include the investigation of flame-retardant properties [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ] and the development of approaches to anode [ 31 , 32 ] and ceramic [ 33 ] materials. Recent results revealed intriguing magnetic effects [ 34 , 35 ] (including the observation of spin glass [ 36 ] and single-molecule magnet [ 37 ] behaviors) and photophysical properties [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ] of CLMSs. CLMSs are widely discussed as homo- and heterogeneous catalysts [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 ], with the most recent papers reporting the impressive activity of metallasilsesquioxanes in ( i ) Chan–Evans–Lam coupling [ 50 ], ( ii ) the hydroboration of ketones [ 51 ], ( iii ) CO 2 valorization [ 52 ], ( iv ) the synthesis of bio-derived ethers [ 53 ], and ( v ) oxidative amidation [ 54 ].…”
