Temperature Sensitive Controller Performance of MR Dampers

Abstract: Magnetorheological (MR) dampers can experience large temperature changes as a result of heating caused by energy dissipation, but control systems are often designed without consideration of this fact. Furthermore, due to the highly nonlinear behavior of MR dampers, many control strategies have been proposed and it is difficult to determine which is the most effective. This paper aims to address these issues through a numerical and experimental study of an MR mass isolator subject to temperature variation. A dy… Show more

“…These factors need to be taken into account when designing control systems for the device (Choi et al, 2005;Sims, 2006;McKee et al, 2018). Specifically, there are three key effects of rising temperature on the MR shock absorber force output (Batterbee and Sims, 2009). The first effect involves the reduction of the yield force corresponding to a reduction in the MR fluid's yield stress.…”

“…Further, control performances may be deteriorated with the variation of temperature (Choi et al, 2005). The root mean square (RMS) of working space increased by 6% in single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) with the decreasing of damping force (Batterbee and Sims, 2009). The acceleration response of the sprung mass and suspension travel in the 2-DOF tracked vehicle suspension are both degraded in a study by Zhang et al (2013).…”
