Template-Assisted Self-Assembly of Conductive Polymer Electrodes for Ionic Electroactive Polymers

Abstract: Ionic electroactive polymers (ionic EAPs) can greatly aid in biomedical applications where micro-sized actuators are required for delicate procedures. Since these types of actuators generally require platinum or gold metallic electrodes, they tend to be expensive and susceptible to delamination. Previous research has solved this problem by replacing the metallic electrodes with conductive polymers (CP) and forming an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) between the conductive polymer (CP) and the solid polym… Show more

“…A PEDOT:PSS/Nafion/PEDOT:PSS actuator fabricated with solution-based polymerization had a maximum θ pp of ∼0.1 rad under 3 V amplitude AC input . A PEDOT/Nafion/PEDOT actuator fabricated by polymerization on a surface-treated Nafion membrane achieved ∼0.32 rad deflection under 1.5 V step input but required more than 80 s to get close to equilibrium . In more recent papers, the PEDOT:PSS/Nafion/PEDOT:PSS configuration was often reported alongside higher-performance ECAs as a benchmark for comparison. ,, From the data provided by Yu et al, a PEDOT:PSS/Nafion/PEDOT:PSS actuator made by drop casting had an equilibrium time >10 s, a θ pp of ∼0.1 rad under 0.1 Hz, ±0.5 V square wave input, and no actuation performance at frequencies above 2 Hz.…”

“…Similarly to IPMCs, Nafion ® is useful as a membrane in CP actuators because it is commercially available and nontoxic. However, it can present challenges of delamination after extensive use or after use at high voltages, meaning that the electrodes can detach and then render the CP actuator nonfunctional [29].…”
