Template for teaching and assessment of problem solving in introductory physics

Abstract: We introduce a template to (i) scaffold the problem solving process for students in the physics 1 course, and (ii) serve as a generic rubric for measuring how expertlike students are in their problem solving. This template is based on empirical studies of the problem solving practices of expert scientists and engineers, unlike most existing templates which are based on prescriptive, theoretical descriptions of expert problem solving and are largely based on how experts solve textbook-style problems. However, t… Show more

“…Boyatzis & Boyatzis (2008), Partners for 21st Century Skills, (2006) and Wismath (2013) states that one of the important components of 21st-century education is problem-solving ability. In addition Burkholder et al, 2020) also mentioned that problem-solving ability is the mandate of the 21 st century skill Thus, RMA as one of the learning approaches that has been proven to be able to improve problem-solving abilities and in line with Indonesia's national curriculum needs to be mastered by teachers. Therefore, the teacher's lack of ability to plan learning using the RMA approach needs serious attention.…”

“…Therefore, in this section it is necessary to design interventions to direct students to apply concepts in the problem solving process. As in Hellers' research, which was based on the prescriptive theory of expert problem solving, asked students to "visualize the problem, "understand the problem", use formal concepts and equations to "represent the problem", write a "solution plan", execute the plan, and then "interpret" and evaluation of solutions" (Burkholder et al, 2020).…”

“…S. S. and C. E. W. designed a template to help students learn good problem-solving practices, based on prior research [ 26 ]. The template asked students to explicitly engage in steps of problem-solving such as planning their approach, listing the assumptions they were making, and reflecting on their solution [ 27 ]. For all iterations of both Phys 1A and 2A, the TA to student ratio was large (and similar for both courses), and the TAs were specially selected on the basis of having previously shown themselves to be particularly good at working with struggling students.…”
