Template Synthesis of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays using Glucose as a Carbon Source: Pt Decoration of Inner and Outer Nanotube Surfaces for Fuel‐Cell Catalysts

Abstract: A facile method is developed to synthesize aligned arrays of open‐ended carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via in situ glucose polymerization in the inner pores of anodic aluminum oxide templates under hydrothermal conditions, followed by carbonization at high temperature. Pt nanoparticles are decorated on the surfaces of the as‐prepared CNTs using the incipient wet method based on the use of NaBH4 as a reductant. Characterization of the resulting structures by transmission electron microscopy and field‐emission scanning… Show more

“…Therefore, the ratio of two anodic current densities I f /I b can also be used to describe susceptibility of a catalyst to poisoning. [61,62] Catalysts with higher I f /I b ratios reportedly also exhibit longer catalytic lifetimes. As shown in Table 1, the current ratio I f /I b of Pt-Pd Sps/TiO 2 NTs/Ti is 5.68, and it has the best poison resistance.…”

“…[32] The reduction peak at 1.2 V in the cyclic voltammogram of Pt-aroundAu/C confirms the presence of Au. [33] The electrochemical surface areas (ESAs) [34] for Pt-around-Au/C. Since Au does not adsorb hydrogen (as shown in Figure 3 A), [33] the nearly identical ESA values (based on Pt weight) of the two samples indicate that Au NPs have a negligible effect on the electrochemical active sites of Pt NPs in Pt-around-Au nanocomposite, which is different from conventional PtAu NPs.…”

“…Sulfonated hydrothermal carbons, either prepared in two steps [18] or in one-pot synthetic method 3 [19], have been also used as acid catalysts for esterification reactions. Furthermore, hydrothermal carbon synthesis is a very versatile method to prepare materials with different porous structures [20][21][22][23][24] and shapes, such as hollow capsules [25][26][27], nanowires [28] or nanotubes [29]. Recently, it has been demonstrated by our group that HT carbon films can be also coated on a structured macroscopic support such as graphite felt [30].…”
