Templated Synthesis of Exfoliated Porous Carbon with Dominant Graphitic Nitrogen

Abstract: We present here a new approach for the synthesis of nitrogendoped porous graphitic carbon (g-NC) with a stoichiometry of C 6.3 H 3.6 N 1.0 O 1.2 , using layered silicate as a hard sacrificial template. Autogenous exfoliation is achieved due to the heterostacking of 2D silicate and nitrogendoped carbon layers. Micro-and meso-porosity is induced by melamine and cetyltrimethylammonium (C 16 TMA). Our density functional calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) observations confirm that the most domi… Show more

“…In our previous investigation, we utilised layered silicate as a 2D nanospace for the synthesis of carbon nitride with a ratio of C 6 N (g-CN) and showed that this material is an excellent option for catalysis and supercapacitor applications. We also identified a thermodynamically stable configuration for C 6 N [ 18 ]. Here, we evaluated the capability of synthesised nanoporous g-CN as a template for the oriented growth of metallic Pt.…”

“…The synthesis of g-CN was performed according to the literature published elsewhere [ 18 ]. After the synthesis of g-CN, for Pt growth in the interlayers, the obtained g-CN (3.5 mg) was dispersed in the DMF (20 mL) and sonicated with a probe sonicator for 2 h. Then, the Pt(acac) 2 was added to the g-CN dispersion.…”

“…These templates direct the growth of porous structures, which can then be obtained by removing the templates. For example, porous TiO 2 , C 3 N 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , and graphene have been successfully synthesized using the template approach and applied to various photocatalytic applications such as pollutant degradation and H 2 production [8,[133][134][135].…”

“…As shown in Figure 6, three peaks at 398 eV, 400 eV, and 401 eV are identified, corresponding to pyridinic nitrogen (N-6), pyrrolic nitrogen (N-5), and graphitic nitrogen (NÀ Q), respectively. [30][31][32] The quantitative concentrations of each peak are depicted in Figure 7a. As for the g-X, the percentage content of N-6 exceeds 52 %, and that of N-5 exceeds 27.5 %.…”
