Temporal anaphora across and inside sentences: the function of participles

Abstract: The paper offers a formal account of the discourse behaviour of participles, which to some extent behave like main clauses in having semantically undetermined relations to their matrix clause, but which should nevertheless be integrated into the compositional semantics of complex sentences. The theory is developed on the basis of Ancient Greek participles and offers an account of their syntax, semantics and discourse behaviour (focusing on the temporal dimension of discourse), integrating Lexical-Functional Gr… Show more

“…In some of these, such constructions have fully subordinating properties (Kazenin 1999, Creissels 2010). It is not clear whether converbs can be considered semantically coordinating in these cases, but see Bary & Haug (2011), where a semantics quite close to coordinating has been proposed for converbally-used participles in Ancient Greek. Therefore, the area where the three-level mismatch theory can be applied is wider than what is covered by this paper.…”

“…See for example Rijksbaron (2002:11,12) for the summarising aorist (here γενέσθαι 'be') and Kamp and Rohrer (1983) for similar French examples with the passé simple and imparfait. For an analysis of the temporal behaviour of Ancient Greek participles in discourse, see Bary and Haug (2011). 10) In a non-dynamic account, such as von Stechow's, anaphoric topic times are modeled as a free variables, which means that they are treated as referential expressions that get their interpretation from an assignment function.…”

“…While Bary (2009a) formulates the default rules for sequences of main clauses and Bary and Haug (2011) investigate the role of participles, the contribution of other kinds of clauses and discourse structure (often indicated by particles) is still to be investigated for Ancient Greek.…”
