Temporal and Convective Inertia Effects in Plain Journal Bearings With Eccentricity, Velocity and Acceleration

Abstract: This paper extends the theory originally developed by Tichy (Tichy and Bou-Said, 1991, Hydrodynamic Lubrication and Bearing Behavior With Impulsive Loads,” STLE Tribol. Trans. 34, pp. 505–512) for impulsive loads to high reduced Reynolds number lubrication. The incompressible continuity equation and Navier-Stokes equations, including inertia terms, are simplified using an averaged velocity approach to obtain an extended form of short bearing Reynolds equation which applies to both laminar and turbulent flows. … Show more

“…As a result, there are no added mass effects within the load resulting from Reynolds equation and for that reason alone a spring-damper model should be used to model the bearing dynamic behavior in the present work. Added mass coefficients (inertia parameters) would be required if inertia effects were retained within the Reynolds equation as in Dousti [33].…”

“…The contribution of lubricant inertia on the damping capacity of SFDs was theoretically and experimentally investigated in several studies. [31][32][33] The theoretical studies typically focus on developing solutions for the SFD lubricant pressure profile and reaction forces, including: closed-form analytical expressions, [34][35][36][37] numerical procedures, 1,[38][39][40][41] force coefficients to represent the direct and cross-coupled inertia and damping. [42][43][44][45] and limiting damper geometries.…”
