Temporal and regional trends of choking injuries in children in Italy, 2001–2013

Abstract: BackgroundChoking injuries in children are a significant public health problem. The present study was aimed at examining the epidemiologic patterns of choking injuries in children using Italian official data from hospital discharge records.MethodsHospital discharge records (from 2001 to 2013) reporting cases of choking injuries corresponding to the ICD-9 CM codes 933 (“Foreign body in pharynx and larynx”), 934 (“Foreign body in trachea, bronchus, and lung”), and fourth digit specifications (933.0 “pharynx”, 93… Show more

“…Conversely, the Brazilian respondents identify a higher risk in coins and buttons. Epidemiological surveillance is helpful to define the configurations of choking injuries in children [ 33 ]. The literature shows that the majority of FB injuries in children are related to coins and marble ingestion [ 34 ], but the most dangerous items are magnets [ 35 ] and batteries [ 36 ], due to the increased chance of severe complications.…”

“…Most of the cases treated were children around the first 3 years of life, with a prevalence of boys, in a ratio of 2:1 [ 21 ]. In Italy, instead, the number of children hospitalized for FB injuries [ 33 ] has decreased in the last decade, but at the same time, the awareness of the problem has improved [ 23 ].…”

“…Published cases are few: Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore for example, reported only 5.9 cases of children foreign body airways obstruction per year from 1939 to 1991 [5]. In Italy, 500 foreign body airways obstructions per year were reported over a 13 years period [6] but only 22 deaths were identified during the study period and the authors hypothesized that different research methods, such as the analysis of death cases due to choking reported from mass media could have been more useful.…”

“…The need for choking prevention strategies is evidenced by epidemiological data [9]. Choking is one of the leading causes of death among unintentional injuries in young children, and remains relevant until the age of 14 [10].…”
