Temporal and spatial patterns of precipitation variability for annual, wet, and dry seasons in Turkey

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In the present study, annual, wet and dry seasons precipitation records for the period 1961-2008 from 271 stations in Turkey were analysed using the rotated empirical orthogonal function (REOF), the Mann-Kendall trend test and the continuous wavelet transform (WT) method. Additionally, relationships between time variability of the significant spatial patterns and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and North-Sea Caspian Pattern (NCP) are examined. The REOF method was used to ana… Show more

“…Droughts were analysed using one of the most common global indexes from the last two decades, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) (e.g. Hayes et al ., ; Cancelliere et al ., ; Livada and Assimakopoulos, ; Unal et al ., ; Vicente‐Serrano et al ., ; Jenkins and Warren, ; Xu et al ., ). The SPI was proposed by McKee et al () and uses precipitation data to quantify conditions of deficit or excess precipitation at different time scales or regions with different climatic conditions.…”

“…The cause of the multi-year drought periods may be due to the impact and teleconnections of largerscale climate forcings which are known to have an influence on the weather patterns and climate of the eastern Mediterranean region. They include the NAO (Barnston and Livezey, 1987;Hurrell, 1995) and the EAWR Alpert, 2005a, 2012), also known as the North-Sea Caspian pattern (Unal et al, 2012). The effect of the winter NAO and its influence and relationship with the EAWR on eastern Mediterranean climate is well known (Gündüz andÖzsoy, 2005).…”

“…Numerous studies have been conducted concerning precipitation in and around Anatolian Peninsula. Some of these deal with its spatial (Erinç, ; Türkeş, ; Ünal et al , ) and temporal (Toros, ; Ünal et al , ) variability, while others assess its variations in response to teleconnection patterns such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (Cullen and deMenocal, ; Türkeş and Erlat, ), or the North Sea – Caspian Pattern (Krichak et al , ; Kutiel et al , ); or to the hypothetical changes in sea surface temperatures (Bozkurt and Şen, ). Erinç and Sungur () studied weather types in Istanbul by classifying daily local observations such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation amount, wind speed and direction.…”
