Temporal associations between substance use and delinquency among youth with a first time offense

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Substance use and delinquency among adolescents has been shown to be positively associated; however, the temporal relationship is not well understood. Examining the association between delinquency and substance use is especially relevant among adolescents with a first-time substance use related offense as they are at-risk for future problems. “…Our study controlled for risk and protective factors that have been linked with alcohol use, such as depression (Dixit & Crum, 2000; Weitzman, 2004), engaging in adolescent delinquency (cf. Guo et al, 2001; Hunter et al, 2014; Williams et al, 2007), being single (Fleming et al, 2010; Snyder & Rubenstein, 2014), parental drinking (White & Jackson, 2004; Wilson & Widom, 2010), living with parents (Gfroerer et al, 1997; White et al, 2006), and identifying as white (Chen et al, 2009). Our study is the first to examine how child supervisory neglect affects patterns of alcohol use differentially among male and female emerging adults.…”

“…This rate was lower than other studies. The rate of alcohol use was reported 51.0%-72.3% for the last year, for the last month 43.8%-60.3% [6,40,41]. A low prevalence rate may be related to the majority of the sample being formed by females.…”

“…This lack of social cohesion, poverty, and household instability are established risk factors for other traumatic experiences, including physical and sexual abuse, which play a role in substance use and sex risk (Bassuk et al, 1998). Lack of social cohesion and prosocial attachments are also linked to delinquent behaviors (Tolan, 1988) and delinquency is associated with later risk taking (Hunter et al, 2014). Further, when a parent is incarcerated, a child is left to cope with feelings of embarrassment, worry, loneliness, confusion, and anger (Johnson and Easterling, 2012).…”
