Temporal trends in food group availability and cancer incidence in Africa: an ecological analysis

Abstract: Objective:We evaluated the relationship between food availability, as the only dietary exposure data available across Africa, and age-standardised cancer incidence rates (ASR) in eighteen countries.Design:Ecological study.Setting:Availability of food groups and dietary energy was considered for five hypothetical time points: years of collection of ASR (T 0) and 5, 10, 15 and 20 preceding years (T –5, T –10, T –15, T –20). Ecological correlations adjusted for human development index, smoking and obesity rates w… Show more

“…Whether dietary factors were related to TC remain debatable. 42,43 This discrepancy might be attributed to the amount of iodized salt in food. 44,45 We found a positive association between smoking and TC, which was controversial in previous studies.…”

“…There are also ongoing changes in diet with “westernisation” characterised by an increased consumption of diets richer in calories and poorer in fruits and fibre. The increased use over time of animal over plant‐based products in sub‐Saharan Africa correlates with increased breast cancer incidence rates 44 . Consumption of diets rich in fruits and cruciferous vegetables has been associated with a decreased breast cancer incidence rates in South Africa, while diets rich in calories and which are nutrient poor conferred higher incidence rates 45 …”

“…The design quality of the included ecological studies was analysed using modified criteria adapted from Dufault and Klar [ 18 ] and Betran [ 19 ] as there is no validated tool for such studies. Each ecological study scored a maximum of 21 points for 15 elements: 12, 6, and 3 points for study design, statistical methods, and reporting quality, respectively.…”
