Temporal variation in pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures requiring surgical intervention

Abstract: Background Pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures commonly require surgical intervention and hospital admission, which is costly and consumes significant health care resources. There are few data regarding temporal characteristics (month, day and hour of injury) of this particular pediatric fracture. We wished to investigate the month, day of the week, and time of occurrence of these fractures to guide appropriate use of health care resources and prevention strategies. Methods This study was a retrospective… Show more

“…A study from Indianapolis of operatively managed supracondylar fractures observed a statistically significant increase in fractures during the summer months, 19 a finding not replicated in our study which failed to demonstrate any significant correlation between month or season of injury. This is likely to be due to differences in climate; whilst Indianapolis has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons typified by large seasonal temperature differences, South-East Queensland has a humid sub-tropical climate characterised by warm humid summer and mild to cool winters.…”

“…1,4 So far, no study has found a significant association between supracondylar fractures and day of the week. 1,19,21 To date, no studies currently exist looking at temporal characteristics of supracondylar humerus fractures in an Australian population and few studies exist looking at both operatively and conservatively managed patients. To the best of our knowledge, no studies exist that compare characteristics of operatively and conservatively managed supracondylar humeral fractures.…”

“…Mechanism of injury variables were classified according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) external cause of injury matrix [ 26 ]. These variables included falls, motor vehicle collision (MVC), struck by/against, and other.…”

“…The data was organized into 24 consecutive bimonthly groups beginning with January/February 2018 and ending with November/December 2021. This allows for comparisons between the different years within bimonthly groups, as there are well known seasonal variations in pediatric fractures [ 7 , 8 ]. Use of this publicly available de-identified data was determined to be exempt by our local Institutional Review Board.…”
