“…Based on field observations, it has been proposed that genetic and phenotypic variation among species in the genus Skeletonema influence their temporal and spatial distributions (Kooistra et al. , Canesi and Rynearson ). In the dynamic coastal and estuarine ecosystems that Skeletonema inhabits, there may be a trade‐off among species as environmental conditions shift between habitats or throughout an annual cycle.…”

“…In the dynamic coastal and estuarine ecosystems that Skeletonema inhabits, there may be a trade‐off among species as environmental conditions shift between habitats or throughout an annual cycle. For example, in Narragansett Bay, six Skeletonema species comprise and often numerically dominate different blooms over the course of a year when dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations range from 0.14 to 18.94 μM (Canesi and Rynearson ). Environmentally variable ecosystems inhabited by multiple Skeletonema species present an opportunity to examine Skeletonema gene expression in situ to further examine the relationship between nitrogen conditions and nitrogen uptake, to define the physiological characteristics among species and to better understand the process of species succession.…”

“…Among them, the genus Skeletonema is distributed ubiquitously in coastal environments, and often predominates numerically in embayments, such as Tokyo Bay (Yoshida et al. ), Narragansett Bay (Canesi and Rynearson ), Chesapeake Bay (Marshall ), and the Gulf of Naples (Ribera d'Alcalà et al. ).…”
