Temporal variations in internal tide multimodal structure on the continental shelf, South China Sea

Abstract: Temporal variations in multimodal structures of diurnal ( D 1 ) and semidiurnal ( D 2 ) internal tides were investigated on the continental slope of the Dongsha Plateau, based on 2-month moored acoustic Doppler current profi ler observations. Harmonic analysis indicated that the D 1 components ( K 1 and O 1 ) dominated the internal tide fi eld. The vertical structure of the K 1 constituent presented a fi rst-mode structure while the M 2 constituent seemed to exhibit a high-mode structure. Amplitude spectra ana… Show more

“…7. Similar to the barotropic tides, the amplitudes of the two baroclinic tidal constituents are comparable (2-4 cm/s), which is diff erent from that in the northeastern continental shelf of the SCS, where the baroclinic K 1 tide is stronger than the M 2 tide (Gao et al, 2017). The K 1 tide shows a fi rst-mode structure at the three stations, as does the M 2 tide at H03, as there is only one current reversal in the vertical.…”
