Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis Consequent to Ear Suppuration

Abstract: The objective of this study is to describe the complication of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis consequent to otitis media. The method applied is prospective case series and data collection done in tertiary referral centre from April 2012 to April 2013. Case description of three adolescent male patients with unilateral TMJ ankylosis consequent to ipsilateral chronic suppurative otitis media. “…PAT has been found to be potential pathway for the spread of pathological processes and infection. Otitis media or mastoiditis may involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and ankylosis could be occurred as a result of this (7,(15)(16)(17). Additionally, we must keep in mind that fractures of the base of the skull may extend through the PAT and this could be destructive for glenoid fossa (18).…”

“…TMJA is frequently associated with trauma, mainly condylar fracture [ 6 ], infection (middle ear infection) [ 7 ], cancrum oris [ 8 ], septic arthritis [ 9 ], and systemic inflammatory conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis [ 10 , 11 ]. Its clinical presentations depend on the age at which ankylosis occurs, the duration of TMJA, and whether the ankylosis is unilateral or bilateral.…”

“…Previous surgery on TM joint can also lead to reankylosis [9,10]. Other causes may be congenital malformations, use of forceps for delivery (2.6 %) [6], infection (e.g., ear suppuration) [11,12], rarely neoplastic [13], or unknown etiology.…”
