Ten–Year Incidence of Dental Caries in Adult and Elderly Chinese

Abstract: Only very few longitudinal studies on dental caries are available in adults and elderly. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to describe the patterns of lesion progression in a group of adult and elderly Chinese followed over a 10–year period of time. In 1984, 587 persons aged 20–80 years were examined and by 1994, 440 of these were still available and re–examined by the same two examiners. All restorations, periodontal conditions and dental caries were recorded for all teeth and surfaces. Only caries … Show more

“…Dental caries is still a major problem worldwide (Fejerskov and Baelum, 1998), although caries prevalence and severity have dramatically decreased in child populations throughout the world, as already discussed in many reviews (Glass, 1982;von der Fehr and Schwarz, 1994). However, it should be noted that dental caries is not a disease of childhood only, but is a lifelong disease process, and as such, caries incidence remains fairly stable in any population with increasing age (Luan et al ., 2000). Moreover, in recent years, it has become apparent that dental caries is still the predominant cause of tooth loss in all populations, and in a modern concept on dental caries (Fejerskov, 1997), it can be fully understood why fluoride, therefore, has to be made available in slightly elevated concentrations in the oral fluids lifelong, to exert its maximum effect on caries lesion development.…”

“…Several studies of dental caries have been taken among older people (17,18,19) and adults in middle age of life (20). If we take the middle age dental caries life study, there is a conclusion that most of the caries experience between ages 26 and 32 occurred in the posterior teeth, particularly in the upper second premolars, upper molars, lower fi rst molars, and lower second molars.…”
