“…This result is slightly higher compared with a recent analysis of Serino and Turri, 22 which assessed signs of peri‐implant disease in 42% of the cases 2 years after a pocket elimination procedure and a bone recontouring treatment. A percentage of 4.46% of implant lost to peri‐implantitis was reported by Al‐Nawas and colleagues 23 in their retrospective study evaluating the cumulative survival rate of a self‐tapping, cylindrical implant system with a conical connection after 10 years of prosthetic loading. The recurrence of suppuration, bleeding, and subsequent bone resorption led to an implant failure in five over 210 (2.38%) implants included in our study.…”

“…An important aspect in the follow-up study of the dental implants is the possibility to compare data between different studies [50]. Despite of all restrictions, the method of implant-related survival calculation is mostly available in other studies [37,38] and therefore appropriate for comparison among different studies.…”

“…Furthermore, we observed the expression of the chemokine receptors (CCR1, 2 and 3) on osteoclasts (Figure and 4). As osteoclasts and FBGCs are observed in close proximity during foreign body reactions [Nuss and von Rechenberg, ], it is possible that chemokines produced by FBGCs during peri‐implantitis [Anderson et al, ; Petkovic et al, ; Venza et al, ] work on the receptors expressed by osteoclasts (CCR1, 2 and 3) resulting in increased bone resorption [Oba et al, ; Fransson et al, ; Miyamoto et al, ; Maruotti et al, ] leading to implant loosening [Al‐Nawas et al, ].…”
