Ten‐year review of gastrointestinal stromal tumours at a tertiary referral hospital in New Zealand

Abstract: Surgery aiming at an R0 resection remains the mainstay of treatment. We propose the most effective way to grow the knowledge base in New Zealand is the establishment of a national register, thereby allowing better clinical decision-making by interpretation of a larger data set.

“…Small bowel cancers demonstrate a dominant geographical distribution in industrialized countries (lesser in Asia), a male preponderance of 1.4:1, and the mean age of diagnosis is in the 5th-6th decades of life 1,2,4,10 . The low prevalence of these malignancies and their widely variable clinical presentations often make the diagnosis challenging, paving the way for an average gap of 6 to 8 months between the onset of symptoms and final diagnosis; as a result most patients are diagnosed at stages 3 or 4 with distant metastasis, unlike our patient, who had a rather acute and early diagnosis 1,2,4,5,10 .…”

“…The small bowel is less known to harbor malignancies when compared to the rest of the gastro intestinal tract, or even compared to any other organ system of the human body. The small bowel accounts for only 2% of all gastro intestinal neoplasms, and these tumors vary widely with regards to epidemiological denominators, and clinico-pathological outcomes 1,2,4 . In the international context, 64% small bowel malignancies are reported to be malignant, of which 40% are adenocarcinomas 1,2,4 .…”

“…Un reciente estudio catarí muestra una edad media de 48 años con predominio masculino para pacientes diagnosticados de GISTs. Sin embargo, estudios con mayor tamaño muestral como los de Miettinen et al 7 y Siu Joey et al 9 , reportan una mediana de edad de 59 años y 69 años respectivamente sin preferencias respecto al sexo. Artigas Raventós et al 1 , muestra una edad media de 65 años sin predominio de género.…”

“…1,2 There is no published data from Australia, and one recent review from New Zealand. 3 Given the relative rarity of GISTs, the bi-national Australia & New Zealand Gastric & Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) Audit, commenced in 2010, is ideally suited to determine disease burden, tumour characteristics and treatment patterns of GISTs, including incidence if possible, in Australia and New Zealand.…”
