Ten year trends in cardiac implantable electronic devices in New Zealand: a national data linkage study (ANZACS-QI 51).

Abstract: Introduction Implant rates for cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED), including permanent pacemakers (PPM) and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), have increased globally in recent decades. This is the first national study providing a contemporary analysis of national CIED implant trends by sex-specific age groups over an extended period. Methods Patient characteristics and device type were identified for ten years (2009 to 2018) using procedure coding in the National Minimum Datasets, which… Show more

“…The PPM implant rates in New Zealand increased at an average of 4.1% per year compared with 2.3% per year in Australia and 2.7% per year in the United Kingdom over the past decade. 1,28 The ICD implant rate (for new and replacement procedures) in New Zealand for 2016 was 141.9/ million, 6 Over the recent decade, the ICD implant rates in New Zealand increased at an average of 4.4% per year compared with 13.3% per year and 16.7% per year in the United Kingdom and Australia respectively. 1,28 The United States had an increase of 3.6% per year between 2011 and 2014.…”

“…[2][3][4][5] The CIED implant rates in New Zealand have increased significantly over the past decade, but regional trends in implant rates are unclear. 6 This paper aims to provide a trend analysis of new CIED implant by region and district health board (DHB) over the past decade.…”

“…Over the last decades, the number of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) implanted has steadily increased as technological advances have allowed for a greater number of conditions to be treated with CIEDs 1,2 . Long‐term CIED implants are often associated with a need to add or replace existing electrodes due to lead failure or need for device upgrade, which in many cases results in lead abandonment, possibly increasing the risk of venous thrombosis 3–5 and complicating future lead extraction procedures 6,7 .…”
