Ten-year trends in dietary intake, health status and mortality rates in free-living elderly people

Abstract: Despite changes in eating habits, no significant decline in total energy and macronutrient intake was recorded in a decade in our elderly. The increased daily consumption of water and decreased use of soft drinks would suggest that these people were still receptive to nutritional advice even in very old age, while the increase in their sweet-eating might be because aging itself increases a person's sweet tooth, and this could be regarded as an age-related effect on dietary habits.

“…Nevertheless, BIA is inexpensive and easy to perform in most settings, and the formula we used has been validated in several Chinese populations [38, 70]. Second, the DDS was derived from a 24-h dietary recall, which may not represent long-term dietary habits; however, community-dwelling older adults have relatively stable diets [40, 71]. Dietary patterns, like those based on several food groups, in our case 6 groups, may be stable from day-to-day while having different foods which contribute to the components of the pattern in question.…”

“…A tendency for vitamin intake to decline with increasing age has been reported in several studies (1,2). Several recent cross-sectional and longitudinal studies concur in saying, however, that there are no specific deficiencies in terms of total energy and macronutrient intake among healthy free-living and successfully aging elderly, and that their intake remains adequate and fairly stable with age (4)(5)(6)(7)(8).
