Ten Years’ Experience with Ultrasound in the Head and Neck

Abstract

Ultrasound (US) has gradually established a place in the otolaryngological diagnostic armamentarium. In this paper, its current role, relative to other imaging techniques, is discussed. It is concluded that, for staging purposes in head and neck squamous cell cancer, US (when combined with ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy) is superior to other imaging techniques. In addition, US may provide valuable information in patients with an elusive head and neck mass.
